Unit 6: Spain´s organisation

Spain is located in the southwest of Europe and It´s organised into Autonomous Cities and Autonomous Communities. The Communities are divided into provinces and they are divided into municipalities.

-         Municipalities: They have one or more cities governed by a City council. The area that belongs to the municipality is called municipal district.

-         Provinces: They are a group of municipalities related geographically or historically.  In Spain there are 50 provinces.

-         Autonomous Communities: They are a group of provinces related geographically, linguistically or historically. They are governed by the Statute of Autonomy.

The municipal government: Composed by The Mayor (or Mayoress) and the councilors. They are elected in municipal elections by the people who live in the municipality every four years and they organise the public services.

The autonomous government: it´s formed by the autonomous parlament, the government counciland the Court of Justice.

The Spanish Government

The Constitution defines Spain as a Democratic State whose Sovereignty resides in the people.Spain is organized as a constitutional monarchy. The Institutions of Spain are:

-         The Head of State: It´s the King who represent Spain and is the Armed Forces commander-in-chief.our king is Felipe VI.

-         The Central Government: It constitutes the executive power. It´s formed by thePresident and the ministers. The President is chosen by the people and the ministers proposed by the President.

-         The Parliament holds the legislative power and it´s formed by two chambers: The Congress of Deputies and the Senate.

-         The Courts of Law: They are the judicial power. They enforce laws and resolve disputes. In Spain we have the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court.
